Faculty of Architecture
The Faculty of Architecture educates students in an active culture of service, scholarship and invention. Uniquely situated at the crossroads of Iran and global influence, the Faculty takes the approach that design is best explored from a sophisticated understanding of both. With a multidisciplinary curriculum emphasizing technology, history and culture, students gain broad knowledge and skills in the management of the environmental, social, and aesthetic challenges of contemporary architectural practice. With opportunities for design workshops, international exchanges, and study travel, graduates of the Faculty of Architecture are well prepared for contribution to both international and local communities of architects and designers.
Design education in the Faculty of Architecture is based on the model of studio learning, with students organized in small groups working with tutors on guided research and design projects over the length of a full term. At the undergraduate level, emphasis is placed on training in drawing and traditional model-making as well as mastery of software and technology currently used in the architectural profession. Students develop the process of design from conception to representation to presentation. At both the undergraduate and graduate level, the studio is the place for the cross-disciplinary integration of knowledge on history and theory, technology and visual communications.
The Department offers students a variety of opportunities for national study and travel. Study tours take design studios to sites of middle-eastern architecture and urbanism. Teaching and research programs are also organized for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Architecture.
Staff at the Faculty of Architecture includes both scholars and practicing professionals committed to the integration of scholarship and design research. Socially and environmentally committed, the Faculty engages communities. Faculty of Arabic Language and Literature
The major language of the Middle East and North Africa, spoken by 280 million people around the world, Arabic is the living medium of a vibrant contemporary literature and culture. Arabic is also the language of Islam, the faith of over a billion of the world's people and a significant influence as a religion and a civilization in the culture and politics of world history, and the globalized context of the modern world. Studying with the Faculty gives you an insight into these places and peoples that continue to play a major role on the world stage, as well as introducing you to the rich heritage of the Middle East, to Islamic sources, and to the current culture and media of the Arab world.
Faculty of Persian Language and Literature
Persian is one of the major languages of the contemporary Middle East. It is spoken throughout Iran and over large areas of Afghanistan; and one of its branches, Tajik, is widely current in Central Asia. In the early modern period, it was the lingua franca for the educated élite in the Indian sub-continent and is still taught in Muslim communities there. Its literature contains some of the finest epic and lyric poetry and its general intellectual and artistic contribution to Islamic culture is unmatched. Ever since the ninth century when Persian (or Farsi) evolved, there has been little discrepancy between the spoken and written languages. In structure it is an Indo-European language (although written in the Arabic script), and therefore relatively easy to learn. Indeed, even in the space of an undergraduate course, it is possible to attain a good command of classical and modern Persian and to express oneself clearly and accurately in the language. There are none of the difficulties of a multiplicity of dialects or of a great chasm between classical and modern. Undergraduates studying for a B.A. honors degree focus entirely on the Persian language and related subjects in literature, history, art and culture.
Almost all those who study Persian use their knowledge of this important language in their subsequent careers. Some become journalists, or work in broadcasting. There is always a demand from the diplomatic service, oil companies, other multinationals, banking and commerce for those with specialist knowledge of the area. A high proportion takes higher degrees and then move into one of the above careers, the academic world, museum or library work, or national and international organizations.
Faculty of Biology
The Faculty is a thriving, diverse academic unit dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in research and teaching. We offer a core curriculum for most of the “biological sciences” taught at Iran and exceptional graduate and undergraduate programs in Biology and sub disciplines. The Faculty, like the discipline, is diverse, offering both undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to study living systems at the level of genes and proteins to entire ecosystems.
Our faculty members are innovative researchers, conducting internationally recognized research in areas as different as the genetics of aging in mice to predicting the impacts of climate change on habitat loss, using theoretical and experimental approaches performed in state-of-the-art research facilities. There is real synergy between research and teaching as our best researchers are also in the classroom – as well, we offer many opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to actively engage in research activities in the Faculty.
Students in our programs acquire the knowledge, tools and skills that allow them to succeed in a wide range of careers, including research in academia, government, NGOs and industry, consultancy, medicine and law, to name a few.
